How a Basic Game of Poker Works

To begin the game, the dealer will give each player 2 cards. The dealer will deal from left to right and they have the last cards to be dealt. The player on the left of the dealer is then the first to make a decision, they can either “Bet” or “Check”. If you decide to bet, you then raise the pot and other players have to bet a minimum of what you have bet. In some poker games, there is a limit as to how much you can bet to begin with. If you check, this will do nothing essentially.

If a player decides that they want to bet, then the other players are allowed to either: Call, Fold or Raise. A call means that a player will match the amount of the raise in the pot. A fold means that a player gives up a hand and loses the chips they have put into the pot for that round. If a player decides to raise, then even more chips are put into the pot. This process will continue until either every player has called, or all the chips are in the pot.

When the first betting round is over, the dealer deals 3 cards face up in the middle of the board. These cards are known as community cards. All players will use this to match up with their cards in order to achieve one of the hands listed above. Then people will continue to either raise or fold. Then onto the next round, the dealer puts down a fourth card, this is called the turn.

Players now have the option to bet, check, fold or raise. A fifth card is added to the table and this is called the river. Each player now has one last chance to make a decision. If there is more than one player left by the end of this, then all players show their cards and the highest-ranked hand will win the whole pot!
